Who was the historian Edward Gibbon?
Edward Gibbon was an English essayist, historian, and politician who lived from 1737 to 1794. He achieved critical and commercial success with his masterwork, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, published across six volumes between 1776 and 1789. His life and literary legacy were further cemented by his autobiographical writings, compiled posthumously as Memoirs of My Life and Writings.
