Stephen Timoshenko was a Ukrainian and American engineer widely regarded as the father of modern engineering mechanics. He began his scientific career in the Russian Empire, became a founding member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, and later emigrated to the United States via the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.
