What are the Spetsnaz GRU special forces?
Spetsnaz GRU are elite special forces operating under the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, historically rooted in the Soviet Union. These units are deployed for reconnaissance and sabotage, and they remain distinct from Russia's Special Operations Forces Command and other intelligence agencies like the FSB and SVR. Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, many of these Ground Forces-sourced brigades have been assigned to Ministry of Defense groups.
