How did the Ottoman principality become an empire?
The Ottoman Empire began around 1299 as a small principality in northwestern Anatolia founded by Osman I. Over the next century and a half, through strategic expansion across the Byzantine frontier into Europe and the assimilation of neighboring Turkic states, it transformed into a centralized imperial state. The symbolic turning point of this proto-imperial era occurred when Sultan Mehmed II conquered Constantinople in 1453.
