Who are the Paradesi Jews of Cochin and the Alhambra Decree?
The Paradesi Jews are a community of Sephardic and Mizrahi Jewish immigrants who settled in Cochin, South India, following their expulsion from Iberia due to the 1492 Alhambra Decree and subsequent Portuguese decrees. Although they integrated into local trade and learned regional languages like Judeo-Malayalam, they retained distinct cultural separations from the older Malabar Jewish community. Most Paradesi Jews later emigrated to Australia and other Commonwealth countries rather than making Aliyah to Israel.
