What is an orogenic belt?
An orogenic belt, also called an orogen or mobile belt, is a region of Earth's crust that has been deformed and uplifted to form mountain ranges through a process known as orogenesis. These zones typically develop when continental plates crumple together or when oceanic plates and crustal fragments accrete over vast geological timescales. Major examples include the Central Asian Orogenic Belt and the vast Alpide belt stretching across Eurasia.
What we know
- An orogenic belt is a zone of Earth's crust affected by orogeny, developing when a continental plate crumples and is uplifted to form one or more mountain ranges. [2]
- The Central Asian Orogenic Belt formed through ocean closures and consists of magmatic arcs, accretionary complexes, seamounts, and ophiolites. [3]
- The Alpide belt is a major seismic and orogenic belt extending for more than 15,000 kilometres along the southern margin of Eurasia. [5]
- The Qinling orogenic belt evolved over billions of years, with its main morphology largely reflecting the Triassic collision between the North China Plate and the South China Plate. [4]
Still open
- The exact formation history of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt is disputed, with scientists debating whether it formed from the accretion of multiple oceanic arcs and continental crusts or from accumulating subduction-accretion complexes on a magmatic arc.
