Why is Bolivia's huge lithium reserve lagging behind?
Bolivia holds the world's largest lithium reserves, estimated at twenty-one million metric tons, yet its production remains very low compared to neighbors like Chile and Argentina. This lag is driven by constitutional mandates requiring state ownership and management, resistance to foreign investment, allegations of corruption within the state-owned enterprise, and technical extraction difficulties due to higher impurities and a longer rainy season. Consequently, the country's extensive lithium resources are currently considered uneconomical to exploit successfully.
What we know
- Bolivia possesses the world's largest lithium reserves with an estimated 21 million metric tons, representing twenty percent of the global total, while more than half of known reserves lie within the Lithium Triangle spanning Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile. [2, 4]
- Bolivian law constitutionally requires all lithium production to be state-owned and managed through the state company Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos (YLB), which has faced allegations of corruption and mismanagement. [2]
- Extraction of lithium in Bolivia is complicated by lower concentrations of lithium, higher impurity levels, and a longer rainy season relative to Chile and Argentina. [2]
- While Chile and Argentina produce roughly forty-five percent of global lithium, Bolivia accounts for less than one percent of global production. [2]
