Is Catholic-Orthodox reunification inevitable under Bartholomew I?
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I stated in November 2019 that he views the reunification of the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic churches as inevitable. This perspective builds upon decades of improving relations, including the lifting of mutual excommunications in 1965 by Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras I. However, intra-Orthodox divisions and distinct theological views continue to complicate the path toward full Christian unity.
